How to Play Ride A Pet: Full Basics
Learn how to play Ride A Pet on PC, mobile, and Xbox: controls, your first radar purchase, carrying eggs, nests, hatching rules, and the 8-minute egg reset.
Last updated:
Ride A Pet plays as a simple loop — find eggs, carry them home, hatch, ride faster — but the game explains almost none of its own rules. This page covers the controls on every platform, the first ten minutes, and the small rules (like the dismount requirement) that new players trip over.
Platforms and controls
Ride A Pet runs on Roblox across PC and Mac, iOS and Android phones and tablets, and Xbox consoles.
| Platform | What it plays like |
|---|---|
| PC and Mac | Keyboard and mouse, precise camera control, and the ability to zoom out furthest for route planning |
| Mobile | On-screen directional thumbstick, a dedicated mount button, and a jump button |
| Console | Its own keybinding scheme, separate from both PC and mobile presets |
There is no aiming or combat skill in Ride A Pet, so no platform is at a real disadvantage. Mobile players lose a little camera precision; desktop players get the best overview for planning egg routes.
Your first ten minutes
- Mount your starting pet. Every player begins with a slow common pet — that is normal.
- Head to Rick's Shop and buy the Advanced Radar for about $50. It is the first meaningful purchase in the game.
- Follow the radar to your first egg. Watch the "Egg Will Break" timer above it; eggs crack on a countdown once you are hauling them.
- Carry the egg back to your plot and drop it into an empty nest.
- Dismount and wait for the hatch. The game will not start hatching while you are mounted — this is the rule most new players miss.
You must dismount to hatch
Eggs placed in a nest only begin hatching once you are on foot. If a hatch seems stuck, check that you are not still riding.
Nests and plot income
Your plot holds several nests. A filled nest does two things: it hatches the egg you carried home, and — once you place a pet in it — it generates cash per second while you play. The community strategy is to keep every nest occupied with your highest-income pet at all times, because idle nests earn nothing.
The 8-minute egg reset
Eggs spawn around the map and reset on a roughly 8-minute cycle. Two practical consequences:
- If the nearby rings are picked clean, wait for the reset rather than chasing a far egg with a slow mount.
- High-value eggs (Blackhole and Cherub) appear on server-wide announcements, which run on their own schedule independent of the 8-minute map reset.
Speed is the progression gate
The map is layered into rings — Starter and Meadow first, then Forest, Desert, and Snow. Faster mounts reach the outer rings, and outer rings hold the better eggs. Every cash decision in your first hours should serve one goal: your next speed upgrade. The fastest pets ranking shows the community speed ladder from Cheetah up to Kitsune.
Multiplayer basics
Eggs are shared spawns, so other players can take the egg you are running toward. This is normal. Do not fight over common eggs; the winning move is to pivot to the next spawn or wait out the reset. Rare egg announcements are the exception — those are worth racing for, and the egg locations guide gives you a head start on the route.
Free stuff at the start
- Join the official group ("this game is gud") for up to +40 hatch luck.
- Watch for version boosts like the Update 2 x2 Cash event.
- There are no redeemable codes in the game yet — anything else you see advertised is fake.
Where to go next
Once the loop feels automatic, move to the beginner guide for your first two hours of upgrades, or jump straight to the egg locations map to start planning rare egg runs. For the long game, the rebirth guide explains when resetting actually pays off.
Reading the screen
New players miss half the game because they never learn the interface. Four things to find in your first session: the egg timer above any egg you approach (the "Egg Will Break" countdown), your plot's nest slots, Rick's Shop for gear, and the server announcement banner that precedes rare egg spawns. Everything important in Ride A Pet flows through those four elements.
The first upgrade tree
After the Advanced Radar, your money has three destinations, and the right order depends on what is limiting you:
| Symptom | Upgrade | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Nests empty, cash trickling | Better income pets | Passive income funds everything else |
| Can't reach the next ring | Faster mount | Speed gates the egg rings |
| Losing rare egg races | Still speed — then radar tiers | Announcements reward arrival time |
The community's default order is income first, speed second, and it holds for almost every account.
Multiplayer etiquette and tactics
Eggs are contested, but there is a difference between competing and feuding. The workable tactics: pivot to the next spawn instead of racing a losing race; pre-position near high-value clusters between resets; and treat announcement eggs as the only fights worth forcing. Rare eggs respawn on later announcements — nothing is truly lost, which is worth remembering when a Kitsune-speed player takes your spawn.
Playing on each device
- PC and Mac are the comfort pick: precise movement, full chat, and the zoomed-out view that makes route planning trivial.
- Mobile handles the loop perfectly well — the thumbstick and mount button cover everything the game asks of you, and shorter sessions suit the 8-minute reset rhythm.
- Console works with its own keybinds; check the control list in the settings menu before your first egg run.
Whichever platform you choose, the dismount rule applies identically: hatches start on foot.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need Robux to progress? No. Every system — rebirths, mutations, rare eggs — is reachable free. Gamepasses are convenience only.
What happens if my egg breaks? The haul is lost and the egg despawns. No penalty beyond the time; grab the next spawn.
Can I move my plot? The plot is your home base for nests; the sources we track do not document relocation, so plan routes that end at it.
How long to the endgame? Community timelines put Dragon-class progress in weeks, with Kitsune beyond that — the speed ceiling is a long project.
